Cricket agent 'asked for $1.2m to fix match result'

BBC-A cricket agent asked for $1.2m (£768,000) to arrange for Pakistan to throw a Test match against England, a court has heard.

London's Southwark Crown Court was told Mazhar Majeed, 36, was recorded discussing deliberately losing last summer's game with a contact in India.

Pakistan eventually beat England by four wickets at the Oval in London.

Cricketers Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif are accused of fixing parts of a Lord's Test match, which they deny.

Prosecutors allege that Mr Majeed, from Croydon, south London, conspired with Mr Butt, 27, and Mr Asif, 28, to fix parts of the Lord's Test between England and Pakistan last August.

Meanwhile, testimony from earlier in the trial which suggested Australian cricketers were the world's biggest match-fixers has been rejected by Australian cricket's governing body.

London's Southwark Crown Court heard on Monday that Mr Majeed had said Australians were "the biggest" when it came to rigging games.

But Cricket Australia said the claims were "baseless and outlandish". (BBC)

All you need is love, Beatle proves as he ties knot again

Paul McCartney made sure he got Nancy Shevell into his life with an intimate wedding on what would have been Lennon's 71st birthday.

THE first time Paul McCartney married at Marylebone Registry Office, the place was mobbed by fans distraught that the last bachelor Beatle was off the market.

Forty-two years later, McCartney returned to the same venue to make Nancy Shevell, an American heiress, his third wife. There were no sobbing girls collapsing into the arms of policemen as when he wed Linda Eastman in 1969, although fans from as far afield as Japan turned out for the occasion.

It was also far from rock'n'roll. McCartney, 69, and Ms Shevell, 51, visited the gym a few hours before the wedding on Sunday, and returned for an evening reception in their back garden. ''I feel absolutely wonderful,'' McCartney said as he hugged his new bride. ''I feel terrific. I feel married.'' Read more at Smh

Natalie Bassingthwaighte: 'I hate being away from my daughter'

Natalie Bassingthwaighte has revealed that she suffers from separation anxiety when she is away from her daughter.

The X Factor Australia judge, who welcomed baby Harper into the world with partner Cameron McGlinchey 13 months ago, is currently travelling around Australia to launch her comeback single 'All We Have' and has had to leave her little girl at home with McGlinchey.

Bassingthwaighte told the Herald Sun: "She's awesome and [motherhood is] just the best thing ever. I came down last night and I've been missing her all morning, but my fiancé is sending me photos and videos, so that helps."

She also revealed that she is happy to be back at work again, saying: "I always tend to multi-task and have a million things on at once, so it's something I'm still learning to work on. But it's nice to come back with something fresh and different for me.

"With the vocal, I got into it so much that it reminded me of my old [Rogue Traders] days, when I was in the studio and just being a complete idiot and it was such a blast recording it."

Bassingthwaighte has said that she is certain that The X Factor will "keep going" next year "because it's been such a success", adding: "You just never know with these things if they'll ask you back, but it hasn't even entered my mind yet. We've still got six weeks to go. It's a nice crazy bunch of people. It's a good balance."

The former Neighbours actress recently revealed that she almost quit the music industry after having Harper.

Real Steel Punches The US Box Office

It might not have been the knockout punch that DreamWorks and Disney were quite hoping for, but robo-boxing drama Real Steel still managed to score a win at the US box office, earning $27.3 million in its first weekend.

George Clooney’s latest directorial job, political drama The Ides of March, also enjoyed a solid start, taking in $10.4 million. Moneyball was fourth with $7.5 million and cancer comedy 50/50 stayed in fifth with $5.5 million.

Courageous slipped from fourth to sixth with $4.6 million, and The Lion King’s 3D re-release fell down to seventh, earning $4.55 million. Anna Kendrick: 'Kissing Joseph Gordon-Levitt in 50/50 wasn't right'

Anna Kendrick has confessed that she and 50/50 co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt decided to forgo a kiss between their characters in the film.

50/50, which centres on a young man named Adam (Gordon-Levitt) as he copes with a cancer diagnosis and his subsequent illness, sees Kendrick as therapist-in-training Katherine, who is also a love interest for Adam.

"The studio wanted to see us kiss at the end, actually. We were thinking about just trying it as an option. Joe very wisely stood up and said, 'If we give it to them as an option, they will use it'," Kendrick recalled in an interview with MTV News.

"So we just decided not to do it, because it really just didn't feel right. And I was relieved, because I had known Joe for too long at that point. It's too weird once you think of someone as a friend to be like, 'OK, I guess we make out now?'"

However, Gordon-Levitt joked that he was disappointed by the omission, adding: "It's a travesty. It's a horrible injustice, and I'm writing a letter."

Gordon Levitt has said that he was convinced he was going to die after wrapping production on 50/50.

Co-star Seth Rogen recently insisted the film represents a cancer story that is true to life.

She's not above criticism from the Brazilian authorities

becoming the world's first billionaire model, but she's not above criticism from the Brazilian authorities, who have deemed her new advertising campaign for Hope lingerie "sexist" and "stereotyped".

The campaign sees Bundchen fully clothed imparting bad news to her husband, then shows her again telling him again that she has crashed his car, maxed his credit card or invited her mother to stay - this time dressed in red lingerie. The advert's tagline is: "You're a Brazilian woman - use your charm".

"The campaign promotes the misguided stereotype of a woman as a sexual object of her husband and ignores the major advances we have achieved in deconstructing sexist practices and thinking," the government officials from the women's secretariat said this week in a statement, the Guardian reports."The model, Gisele Bündchen, encourages Brazilian women to use their 'charm' … to lessen possible reactions from their partners," something that amounts to "discriminatory content against women" the statement says - an infringement of two articles of the Brazilian constitution.Read more at Vogue
