World's oldest car sells at auction for $4.6 mn

WASHINGTON: A steam-powered car considered the oldest vehicle in the world still running has sold at auction in the United States for more than $4.6 million.

The De Dion-Bouton et Trepardoux Dos-a-Dos Steam Runabout, nicknamed "La Marquise," which was built in France in 1884, sold for more than twice its estimate at auction Friday in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

RM Auctions listed its top speed as 38 miles per hour (61 kilometers per hour) and said it had only had four previous owners over the past 127 years.

The late Texas collector John O'Quinn had bought the historic car, which participated in the first automobile race in 1887 and four separate London-to-Brighton runs, for $3.5 million in 2007.

The identity of the new owner was not given.

US media reports noted that another car, housed at the National Motor Museum of Britain, also lays claim to the title of the world's oldest vehicle. However, the reports said the British car, built in 1875 by Robert Neville Grenville, has only three wheels, requires someone to ride along and tend the boiler, and bears little resemblance to a modern automobile.

The four-wheeled De Dion-Bouton was constructed for the French Count De Dion -- one of the founders of the company that built it. It was named "La Marquise" after the count's mother.

The $4.6 million price tag includes a 10 percent buyer's premium, which goes to the auction company.

"With impeccable provenance, fully documented history, and the certainty that this is the oldest running family car in the world, 'La Marquise' represents an unrepeatable opportunity for the most discriminating collector," the catalogue said. "It is unquestionably and quite simply one of the most important motor cars in the world." (AFP)

Real Steel Punches The US Box Office

It might not have been the knockout punch that DreamWorks and Disney were quite hoping for, but robo-boxing drama Real Steel still managed to score a win at the US box office, earning $27.3 million in its first weekend.

George Clooney’s latest directorial job, political drama The Ides of March, also enjoyed a solid start, taking in $10.4 million. The two new arrivals shoved Dolphin Tale down to third, but the heart-warming family pic still nabbed $9.1 million. Moneyball was fourth with $7.5 million and cancer comedy 50/50 stayed in fifth with $5.5 million.

Courageous slipped from fourth to sixth with $4.6 million, and The Lion King’s 3D re-release fell down to seventh, earning $4.55 million. That still kept it ahead of faltering thriller Dream House, which sank to eighth and $4.5 million. In ninth place we find What’s Your Number? taking $3 million and Abduction slumming it in 10th with $2.9 million. Read more at Empire Online

'Iron Man 3' To Be Shot in North Carolina

Marvel Studios has decided to shoot the Shane Black-directed Iron Man 3 in North Carolina.

The Detroit Free Press reports the studio had sought to film the superhero sequel at Michigan's Raleigh Michigan Studios, but wanted between $20 million and $30 million in incentives. Because of a cap implemented on film incentives earlier this year by the Michigan state government, any film incentive more than $25 million would have to be brought before the legislature.

Though the state did make a matching offer of $20 million in incentives, Marvel ultimately decided to shoot the film in North Carolina.Read more

Clinton focuses on Haqqani network in talks with Khar

NEW YORK/WASHINGTON: “The first and the last thing” on US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s agenda for her three-and-a-half-hour meeting with Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar was counter-terrorism, particularly the issue of the Haqqani network, says the US State Department.

Secretary Clinton met Ms Khar in New York on Sunday evening and were “fully up to date” on the meetings between US and Pakistani military leaders in Spain two days ago, US officials said.

Later, the State Department released an unusually candid account of the meeting, with two senior officials telling reporters how the meeting was planned, how it proceeded and what subjects were discussed.

The two officials explained that when Secretary Clinton was given the schedule of her meetings during the current UN General Assembly, she said she did not just want 20 or 30 minutes with the Pakistani foreign minister, but wanted to “really sit down and talk and have a conversation about where Pakistan and the United States were headed”.

Secretary Clinton wanted to make sure that she was given “the time and respect to hear Pakistan’s views, and we hope that they would similarly listen to ours”, one of the officials said.

But the Sept 13 attacks on the US Embassy and Nato headquarters in Kabul changed the nature of the meeting.

“And although it still lasted a good long time and we did review the whole nature of our relationship, the issue of counter-terrorism and particularly the issue of the Haqqani network was, as you can imagine, the first thing on the secretary’s agenda and also the last,” the official said.

“The Secretary’s message was that given the efforts of the Haqqani network on the 13th of September, that this was an issue that we had to deal with and that this is a threat to both Pakistan and the United States.”

The Pakistani foreign minister was quite clear in return that “they couldn’t condemn more” the Sept 13 attacks and that this kind of terrorism was a threat to Pakistan and to Pakistanis as well.

“That part of the conversation concluded that joint efforts need to be made to end this threat from the Haqqanis, and that Pakistan and the United States ought to be working together on this and not separately,” said the US official. “And I thought it was important that both ministers committed themselves to working on this as a matter of priority.”

The rest of the conversation focused on three issues: the Afghan-led and Afghan-owned reconciliation process, the regional aspects of bringing peace to Afghanistan and bringing prosperity to the South Asian region.

Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir briefed the US side on last week’s meeting of the Pak-Afghan commission and the two sides discussed their joint goals for reconciliation in Afghanistan.

While discussing a regional approach for bringing peace to Afghanistan, the two sides also reviewed the upcoming meetings in Istanbul on Nov 2 and in Bonn on Dec 5 and the role that Pakistan was interested in and could play to support that regional effort.

Secretary Clinton talked about the idea of the New Silk Road, her vision of an economic space between Central Asia and India that she proposed in Chennai earlier this year.

Foreign Minister Khar raised economic issues that were important to Pakistan, like market access and the reconstruction opportunity zones.

“Can you say whether the secretary requested and whether the minister agreed to for Pakistan to take additional action against the Haqqani network?” the two officials were asked.

“Well, there are two things. One is that there are clearly actions that the Pakistanis could take to go after the Haqqani network, and I thought the minister was quite clear in saying that those were the kinds of things that the Pakistani government would look at and would take action on. And then secondly, there are those things that it might be possible to do jointly. And so there was a conversation about what those kinds of things might entail as well,” one of the officials replied.

“The secretary did suggest specific things that Pakistan could do to go after them more strongly?” a journalist asked.

“What we said was that this is a huge problem and that Pakistan’s got to deal with it,” the official replied.

“Was the Haqqani network literally the first and the last thing that they talked about in this meeting?” asked another journalist.rEAD MORE AT DAWN.COM

Deadly earthquake rocks India, Nepal and Tibet

Dozens of people have been killed and many more injured after a magnitude 6.9 earthquake shook north-eastern India, Nepal and Tibet.

The epicentre of the earthquake was in India's mountainous Sikkim state, where at least 18 people were killed.

Rain and landslides are hindering search and rescue operations there and officials in Sikkim fear that the toll could rise further.

Several earthquakes hit the region this year, but none caused major damage.

At least five people were killed in Nepal, police there say, and at least seven died in Tibet, China's official Xinhua news agency reported. At least six other people were killed in other Indian states.

Officials in all regions say the death toll is likely to rise as rescuers reach the remote mountainous areas struck by the quake.Read more on BBC

Clinton presses Pakistan for action on Haqqani network

NEW YORK: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pressed Pakistan on Sunday to take action against Haqqani militants the United States blames for an attack on the US embassy in Kabul, officials said.

Clinton met in New York with Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar for 3.5 hours of “very substantial” and “very candid” talks that began and ended with counter-terrorism, Clinton spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

A senior State Department official also told reporters on condition of anonymity that the talks began and ended with concerns about the Haqqani network Washington suspects receives Pakistani government support.

The September 13 attack on the US embassy in Kabul, which left 15 dead, “changed the nature” of the previously planned gathering, which lasted longer than expected, according to the official.

Meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Khar made clear to Clinton that Pakistan “couldn’t condemn more” the attack, adding “that this kind of terrorism was a threat to Pakistan” as well, the official said.

“We were specific about the need for Pakistan to take action on the Haqqani network.” The Pakistanis “understand the threat the Haqqanis pose to them,” and that “it is time” for them to take action, he said when asked about the Pakistani reaction,” according to the senior US official.

Cameron Munter, the US ambassador in Islamabad, bluntly cited evidence Saturday linking the Pakistani government to the Haqqani network of militants, blaming the group for the Kabul siege.

But the US official said the “evidence” was not raised in Clinton’s talks with Khar.

US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has warned that the United States would retaliate against Pakistan-based insurgents.

Washington has long urged Pakistan to take action against the Haqqani network and suspected the group enjoys support within Pakistan’s intelligence services.

But the public comments are a mark of strained ties between the fragile anti-terror allies, with relations fractious since the US raid in Pakistan that killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in May, without Washington first informing Islamabad.

Tourists eye another big win over Zimbabwe today

HARARE: Pakistan are expected to bring in a couple of youngsters in their line-up as they look to complete a 3-0 clean sweep by winning the third and final One-day International against Zimbabwe on Wednesday (today).

The tourists have created a chance to introduce a few more youngsters into the team and test different combinations, which was one of the major aims of their journey. Although they were pushed hard in the first match, they regrouped strongly to put on a sterling all-round performance in the second.

Mohammad Hafeez has underlined his role as a premier allrounder but some of the other members of the squad will also want to use the opportunity to make an impression — particularly the youngsters and players making their comebacks. Sohail Tanvir has made a convincing comeback while Imran Farhat also put his hand up. It will be up to the other fringe members of the squad to capitalise on the chances they may get, especially against opponents struggling to stay above water.

Pakistan have given themselves an ideal opportunity to experiment, but will have to juggle cleverly to include their fringe players. Rameez Raja and Yasir Shah could be brought into the side although it will be harsh to drop Imran Farhat after his impressive showing in the second match. One of Junaid Khan, who injured his ankle during that match but returned to complete his spell, or Aizaz Cheema may have to make way for Sohail Khan, and Asad Shafiq could to slot in at No 3 although Pakistan are unlikely to leave Younis Khan out.

Zimbabwe will want to stop their series against Pakistan from spiralling into a failure and the final ODI is their last chance to do so before the Twenty20s start. So far, they have dramatically swung from a team that can compete fiercely, to one that can be comprehensively outplayed by the same opposition.

On a good batting surface, they will have to apply themselves with less inhibition than they have done so far. Importantly, Zimbabwe will have to show more energy and purpose in the field to back up the performances of their bowlers. Harare does not offer much for either the seamers or the spinners but if they can maintain accuracy and discipline, they should be rewarded.

Zimbabwe’s idea of playing two frontline seamers and two spinners backfired on them on Sunday and they may choose to return to a three-pronged pace attack with Kyle Jarvis returning in place of Prosper Utseya. The No 6 position is still a contentious one and Malcolm Waller had not been able to make it his own in two attempts. Craig Ervine, Forster Mutizwa and Regis Chakabva are all part of the squad and one of the three could be given the opportunity to make a case for themselves there.

Despite Zimbabwe’s tentative approach to batting in the first innings on Sunday, the Harare pitch remains batsmen-friendly. Any advantage for the seamers will dissipate after the first hour of play and chances are the team that wins the toss will bowl first to exploit that. Another perfect summer’s day in Africa is expected to close off the ODI series.(The News Pk)
