Vegetarian dating site rapped - Majority of users are meat eaters

A dating website promising users that they could "meet single vegetarian men and women looking for love in the UK" has been forced to change its approach after admitting that the majority of its members were actually meat eaters.

Veggiedates.co.uk, operated by dating and friendship website giant Global Personals, purported to be a "trusted UK vegetarian online dating agency".

However, a complainant contacted the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) that the site's repeated claim that it was for vegetarians and vegans only was misleading, because he understood that "the majority of the people listed on the site were not vegetarian or vegan".

Veggiedates said that it was one of several websites to share a "common database of members", and acknowledged that the "majority" of people on the site were not vegetarians or vegans.

It said that functionality for searching profiles purely on vegetarian or vegan status was not available at the moment, but it hoped to introduce the feature in the future.

The website also tried to argue that its service did not imply that it was exclusively for vegetarians or vegans as nowhere on the site was the word "only" used.

However, the ASA said that the site was "clearly marketed at vegetarians and vegans", and so ordered Veggiedates to no longer imply that it was exclusive to non-meat eaters. Read more
