Real Steel Punches The US Box Office

It might not have been the knockout punch that DreamWorks and Disney were quite hoping for, but robo-boxing drama Real Steel still managed to score a win at the US box office, earning $27.3 million in its first weekend.

George Clooney’s latest directorial job, political drama The Ides of March, also enjoyed a solid start, taking in $10.4 million. The two new arrivals shoved Dolphin Tale down to third, but the heart-warming family pic still nabbed $9.1 million. Moneyball was fourth with $7.5 million and cancer comedy 50/50 stayed in fifth with $5.5 million.

Courageous slipped from fourth to sixth with $4.6 million, and The Lion King’s 3D re-release fell down to seventh, earning $4.55 million. That still kept it ahead of faltering thriller Dream House, which sank to eighth and $4.5 million. In ninth place we find What’s Your Number? taking $3 million and Abduction slumming it in 10th with $2.9 million. Read more at Empire Online
