Kapil blasts Tendulkar's 100th ton hype

NEW DELHI: Former India great Kapil Dev has slammed the media's obsession with Sachin Tendulkar achieving 100 international centuries, saying the focus should be on the team's performances.

During India's recent tour of England, speculation reached fever pitch about Tendulkar reaching the landmark figure.

But the star failed to fulfil his fans' hopes and was left stranded on 99 hundreds -- 51 in Tests and 48 in one-day internationals.

India were blanked 4-0 in the Test series, conceding their number-one ranking to the hosts, and also lost the one-dayers 3-0.

"You seem more keen about Sachin's 99 hundreds and not about how we are going to win the next series," Kapil said while delivering the Dilip Sardesai lecture in memory of the former Test batsman in Mumbai on Thursday.

"I am not saying don't give credit to individual performances, but the country should come first.

"Everyone knows Sachin has 99 centuries, but how many know which of those have ended in victories? Out of Sachin's 99 hundreds, 60 have ended in wins. If anyone reports that I'll be happy.

"We have to change our mindset. If we lose the match, what's the use of statistics? To hell with that!"

Kapil, 52, regarded as one of the best all-rounders of his era, claimed a then-world record 434 Test wickets, besides taking 253 one-day wickets, before quitting the game in 1994.

He also scored 5,248 runs in Tests and 3,783 in one-dayers.

Kapil, who became India's first World Cup-winning captain in 1983, also blamed tight scheduling for the team's disastrous show in England.

The Indian players figured in the lucrative Twenty20 Indian Premier League (IPL) a few days after winning the World Cup in April before leaving for the West Indies and England tours.

"The players did not get time to unwind and enjoy their World Cup victory. They had worked four years for it. But they just got four days before the IPL began," Kapil said.

"They should have got more time to enjoy the moment. If you don't give time to unwind, you lose the passion to play. That's what happened in England."

Kapil also wanted players to be paid more for representing the country than their IPL franchises.

"How can you give more money to play for a club and not for playing for the country?" he said.

Kapil, who played 131 Tests and 225 one-dayers over a 16-year career, wanted the burden on seamers to be reduced in order to avoid injuries, like the ones to current spearheads Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma and Munaf Patel.

"The cricket board should understand how much burden the fast bowlers can take," he said. "They can't bowl for 365 days." (The News Pk)

NATO presses Pakistan on 'terrorist' safe havens

BRUSSELS: NATO’s chief piled pressure on Pakistan on Friday to step up the fight against “terrorists” enjoying safe havens in the border region with Afghanistan.

Amid growing US pressure for Pakistan to take action against al Qaeda-linked extremists, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen called for a “positive engagement” from Islamabad to ensure stability in Afghanistan.

ISLAMABAD:Covert agreements with US be made public: Nawaz

Dawn.com: PML-N chief Mian Nawaz Sharif asked the government on Friday to disclose terms of engagement with the United States under which the so-called war on terror was being fought.

He said at a press conference that the nation had the right to be informed about the covert agreements.

According to official estimates, he said, the country had suffered a loss of $69 billion during the war on terror and sacrificed thousands of lives. “But in return we are getting threats and being treated as an accused.”

He said flawed policies of the government formulated after bypassing parliament were responsible for the current situation. He also criticised the government for ignoring political parties while taking major decisions.

The government’s attitude, he said, encouraged violations of the country’s sovereignty.

Had the government taken a firm stand on the Raymond Davis issue, it would have received support from international community.

He said the CIA operative had been released in a mysterious manner.

He said it was meaningless to talk about self-respect, national pride and sovereignty without breaking the begging bowl.

He called for preparing a consensus economic agenda for 10 to 20 years and proposed an amendment to the constitution to put a bar on taking foreign loans. He said the consensus agenda would be binding on future governments and they would be required to follow it in letter and spirit.

“Anyone deviating from the agenda should be thrown out,” he said.

The PML-N chief said no single political party or individual could steer the country out of the present crisis, adding that only collective efforts could help the country adopt the path of self-reliance and economic stability.

He termed the Abbottabad operation carried out by US Navy Seals to kill Osama bin Laden a violation of national sovereignty and regretted that President Asif Ali Zardari had written an article praising the operation while Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani declared it a great victory.

Answering a question, he said the resolution adopted by the APC was an important message to the United States that the political and military leadership was united on national issues.

He said the people of Pakistan would defend the country’s territorial integrity with the might of a united nation.

“It is not possible to defeat the resolve of 180 million people,” he said.

He described the APC resolution as a test for the government and said he still had doubts if it would be implemented.

He said the government was undermining credibility of democracy just like former military ruler Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf had damaged the credibility of the armed forces for the sake of his personal interests.

He said the people of the country were reeling under terrible inflation. Unemployment has touched new levels and the energy crisis was leading to closure of industries. The debt burden has exceeded $60 billion.

Mr Sharif urged the government to mend its ways, take steps to end corruption and implement decisions of the superior judiciary.

Mullen retires, New military chief seeks balance in US power

Even before taking over as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest military office in the land, Army Gen. Martin Dempsey made one thing clear. He differs with his predecessor on one of the most important issues of the day: the threat posed to national security by a growing national debt.

Dempsey was to be sworn in Friday as successor to Navy Adm. Mike Mullen, who is retiring today.

At his Senate confirmation hearing in July, Dempsey was asked whether he agrees with Mullen’s oft-repeated assertion that the debt crisis is the single biggest threat to American national security.

“I don’t agree exactly with that,” Dempsey said.

In his view, developed in the course of a 37-year career that includes two tours of command in Iraq and one in Saudi Arabia, American global power and influence are derived from three strengths: military, diplomatic and economic.

“You can’t pick or choose,” he said; none of the three is paramount.

It’s too early to know how much change Dempsey will foster in his role as the top U.S. military officer, but it’s certain that pressures to cut the defense budget and what that implies for the military and for American foreign policy will be a dominant issue from Day One of his tenure.

So while he sees the debt problem as highly important, Dempsey believes the United States cannot be successful in managing its national security and international affairs without asserting influence through a combination of a powerful military, an effective diplomatic corps and a sound economy.

His will be among the key voices in recommending how to cut hundreds of billions of dollars from the defense budget over the coming decade.

By law, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs serves as the senior military adviser to the president, the president’s National Security Council and the secretary of defense. But the chairman is not directly in the chain of command that extends from the president to the secretary of defense to commanders in the field. He is the public face of the U.S. military and weighs in on major policy decisions but is not actually in charge of any troops.

Dempsey is the first Army general to hold the job since Hugh Shelton retired in 2001.

One of the legacies of Mullen’s four years as chairman was his less-than-successful effort to persuade Pakistan’s military chief, Gen. Ashfaq Pervez Kayani, to do more to contain and disable violent extremist groups like al-Qaida and the Haqqani network that use Pakistan as a haven.

In the final week of his tenure, Mullen made his biggest headline by telling a Senate committee that the Haqqanis are a “veritable arm” of Pakistan’s intelligence service and by asserting that Pakistani intelligence supported and facilitated a string of Haqqani attacks on Americans in Afghanistan. His statement infuriated the Pakistan government and arguably set back, at least temporarily, an already frayed U.S.-Pakistani relationship.Read more at AAJ tv

L'Oreal denies allegations of lightening it for their ad campaign

The French cosmetic brand L'Oreal is in the news for the wrong reasons again - it has been accused of altering Freida Pinto's skin tone in its latest campaign, but the brand has denied the allegations.

"This is with reference to certain incorrect reports on the internet about L'Oreal Paris lightening Freida Pinto's skin-tone in the campaign 'Colors Take Flight Project Runway'. L'Oreal Paris strongly reiterates that Freida Pinto's skin-tone in the campaign has not been altered in any way," said a statement from the company today (September 29).

"This campaign was meant to highlight Freida Pinto's make-up colors applied on her eyes and lips. Thus, some powerful studio lights with ring-flash have been used for this purpose to create a runway effect on the picture. There has been no whitening retouching process whatsoever on her face," it added.

The 'Slumdog Millionaire' actress has been L'Oreal Paris spokesperson since 2009.

This is not the first time the cosmetics brand has been accused of lightening the skin tones of its models. Recently, the brand was accused for using airbrushed pictures of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for one of their campaigns.(Masala.com)

She's not above criticism from the Brazilian authorities

becoming the world's first billionaire model, but she's not above criticism from the Brazilian authorities, who have deemed her new advertising campaign for Hope lingerie "sexist" and "stereotyped".

The campaign sees Bundchen fully clothed imparting bad news to her husband, then shows her again telling him again that she has crashed his car, maxed his credit card or invited her mother to stay - this time dressed in red lingerie. The advert's tagline is: "You're a Brazilian woman - use your charm".

"The campaign promotes the misguided stereotype of a woman as a sexual object of her husband and ignores the major advances we have achieved in deconstructing sexist practices and thinking," the government officials from the women's secretariat said this week in a statement, the Guardian reports."The model, Gisele Bündchen, encourages Brazilian women to use their 'charm' … to lessen possible reactions from their partners," something that amounts to "discriminatory content against women" the statement says - an infringement of two articles of the Brazilian constitution.Read more at Vogue

Mortal Kombat Gets Fully Rebooted

Back in January, Michael Jai White seemed confident that a full Mortal Kombat feature would follow the series of webisodes in which he played Jax. Turns out he spoke the truth, and director Kevin Tancharoen has just revealed that, following the web series, Warners and New Line are keen to get Mortal Kombat back on the big screen as soon as possible.

The Mortal Kombat: Legacy shorts followed Tanchareon's Rebirth calling card, which caused a flurry of fan excitement last year. Taking a different tack from the original Paul WS Anderson film adaptation - which opted for a straightforward but actually pretty successful fantasy-Enter the Dragon approach - Rebirth and its successors opted for a Nolan-influenced, darker, more grounded reworking of the videogame's universe, which saw Jax and Sonya Blade (Jeri Ryan) as cops, and Mortal Kombat as a sort of supernatural underground fight club, populated with Bat-villain-alike freaks.

"The web series did so well," says Tancharoen, "that we started seriously talking with New Line about doing a film. They had really liked the style and the storytelling, and the numbers were proven, so they said we should go for it!"

Oren Uziel, connected to mooted MK restarts for years, will write the screenplay, which Tancharoen promises will remain "familiar to people who have been following the webisodes, but will be its own movie. I wanted to make sure that you won't have to have seen all ten episodes previously - or have played the videogame - to understand the movie. I've always been a fan of properties like Batman where you can expand the universe in different directions. Mortal Kombat is big enough that you can allow for multiple different kinds of storytelling."Read more

Tilda Swinton interested in silent cinema

(Cover) - EN Movies - Tilda Swinton admits that she prefers silent cinema.

The actress stars in We Need to Talk about Kevin, an adaption of Lionel Shriver’s bestselling 2003 novel of the same name. The film follows a mother called Eva as she recounts events leading up to her son Kevin’s shocking massacre of his fellow students at his school.

The movie premiered at this year’s Cannes International Film Festival.

Tilda recently revealed that despite her articulate performances she enjoys playing characters with few lines.

“I’m much more interested in silent cinema,” Tilda admitted to Empire magazine. “If you did a word count, I’m pretty word-light. I’m pretty dumb. Probably the dumbest performer in the last 20 years, I’d say. I’m much more interested in working dumb. I kind of think that’s what cinema is for.”

The 50-year-old has starred in a wide range of Hollywood movies including The Chronicles of Narnia and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

But, in the past Tilda has controversially declared that she has “no interest” in acting.

Steve Carell lands murderer role

(Cover) - EN Movies - Steve Carell is attached to new movie Foxcatcher.

The 49-year-old comic star has joined forces with Bennett Miller, the director of Moneyball and 2005’s critically acclaimed Capote.

Foxcatcher is based on the true story of scientist and millionaire John du Pont.

In 1996 du Pont shot and killed Olympic athlete David Schlutz on his estate. Following the murder du Pont barricaded himself in the estate and negotiated with police for two days.

Bennett has been working on the script with E. Max Frye and Dan Futterman, who also co-wrote Capote.

Steve is set to play central character John Du Pont.

The 49-year-old funny man has recently completed filming on hit sitcom The Office. He is best known for his work in comedies such as the 40-Year-Old Virgin and Crazy, Stupid, Love, but this project will see Steve test his dramatic talents.

His straight roles in films such as Dan in Real Life and Little Miss Sunshine have largely gone under the radar. Steve may be hoping that Bennett can lead him to Oscar success. With only two major films under his belt the director certainly has a good track record. Philip Seymour Hoffman won the academy award for best actor for his portrayal of Truman Capote and there is already talk of Brad Pitt taking home next year’s Academy Award for his role in Moneyball.Read more at Music- News
